The fall season has finally become
winter, a time when many local societies take a break. There are still some great
programs to attend, however. Keep
sending in your group’s schedule. Take some time to explore heritage as the
winter months slow out pace.

Jul
7-Dec 29: Six-museum collaborative project entitled "Summer
in the Finger Lakes" that examines the history of summertime leisure on
Canandaigua, Cayuga, Keuka,
Owasco, and Seneca Lakes. Each museum is hosting an exhibit that
addresses a different aspect of summer in the Finger Lakes. At Ontario County Historical Soc. and Geneva
Historical Soc. museums. For more

Dec
9: Celebrate the
Christmas season in an old-fashioned setting at the Geneva
Historical Society’s annual Holiday Open House. 2:00-4:00 PM. The 2007 Open House will include ornament making
for children and their parents to enjoy,
refreshments, and music for the season. A special holiday tour of Balmanno
Cottage will also take visitors back to Christmas in the 1960s. Tours will
leave from the Prouty-Chew House at 2:30 and 3:30, and last about one-half
hour. Admission to the Holiday Open
House is free of charge, as are all activities and refreshments. For more

Jan-Mar, 2008: Horse
Drawn Sleigh Rides - Sunday
Afternoons at the Granger Homestead. This popular activity will be offered
every Sunday afternoon 1:00-3:00 PM, weather permitting, on the grounds of the
Granger Homestead, 295 North Main Street, Canandaigua. The Sleigh Ride season
usually begins about mid-January and continues until mid-March providing Mother
Nature gives us adequate snow cover and frozen ground.
Due to the unpredictability of weather, it is
advised to call the Homestead (585)394-1472 on the weekends to listen to a
recorded message about conditions and availability.
Adults $5.00, Children $3.00 (ages 4-12) and
Children under age 4 Free - No reservations required.

PUBLICATIONS
Here are a couple of suggestions for winter reading or gifts for the holidays:
Cornplanter: Chief Warrior of the Allegany Senecas, by Thomas S. Abler, was recently published by Syracuse University Press. A biography of one of the most prominent Seneca leaders in the 1790s. $19.95 in paperback.
Syracuse University Press has also published The Collected Seeches of Sagoyewatha, or Red Jcket, edited by Granville Ganter. More than 50 speeches by one of the most famous Native American speakers. $39.95 in cloth cover.

Intersection of Rt. 96 (Main St.) Victor and Plastermill Rd. This photo from the "Rochester Images" collection of the Rochester-Monroe County Public Libraries shows the first bridge over the old Lehigh Valley RR mainline. The third bridge in that location will shortly be replaced.

NYS Route
96 through the Town of Victor will shortly be under construction. From Victor through Farmington the road has
seen many changes in the past century.
The picture above was taken in 1920 and shows the intersection of Rt.
332 (branching off to the right) and Rt. 96.
